Text alerts

Last updated August 15, 2026

Two volunteer moderators can choose to get a text when somebody submits an event or a business for review. Nobody else on this site gets a text at all. This page shows how they sign up, what they agree to, and how they stop it.

Who gets these messages

The two volunteer moderators of Friends of Milo, and only them. Residents don’t get texts from this site. There’s no public sign-up for one, no mailing list, and no marketing message of any kind. A moderator who never turns this on never gets a text either, because it’s off until they switch it on themselves.

How a moderator signs up

The opt-in is inside the site rather than on a public page, because only two people in town have an account that can reach it. A moderator signs in at visitmilomaine.org/sign-in, passes a second-step check with an authenticator app, and opens Account, then Security. The screenshot below is that panel, as it appears to them.

The Security panel of a moderator account. Under the heading Text alerts, a field for a mobile number, then an unticked checkbox carrying the full consent sentence, then a button reading Turn text alerts on.
The opt-in control, in the moderator’s own account settings.

They type their own mobile number and tick the box. The box is empty until they tick it, and nothing is saved without it: an unticked box is refused by the browser and refused again by the server. Nobody but the owner of a number ever enters it.

What they tick is stored with the number, word for word, along with the time they ticked it. So what a moderator agreed to can be produced exactly, rather than described later from memory.

The sentence they agree to

Text this number when a submission needs review. These are moderation alerts from Visit Milo, Maine, sent by Friends of Milo. Message and data rates may apply, message frequency depends on how many submissions come in, and I can stop them any time by replying STOP or by turning this off here.

What gets sent

Straight after opting in, one confirmation:

Visit Milo, Maine: you are signed up for event moderation alerts. Frequency varies. Msg and data rates may apply. Reply STOP to opt out, HELP for help.

Then, when a resident submits an event, an alert like this one:

Visit Milo, Maine: a new event submission is waiting for review. https://visitmilomaine.org/admin Reply STOP to opt out.

And when a business asks to be added to the directory, the same alert with the one word changed:

Visit Milo, Maine: a new business submission is waiting for review. https://visitmilomaine.org/admin Reply STOP to opt out.

That’s the whole message, either way. It names nothing: not the event, not the business, not the person who sent it, not their contact details. A text shows up on a lock screen, and submitter details are staff-only everywhere else on this site, so they stay out of the message too. Frequency follows whatever the town submits, which runs to a handful a month. Message and data rates may apply.

Stopping them

Reply STOP to any message and they stop. Untick the same box in account settings and they stop. Either one works on its own, and the site records the moment a moderator turns them off. Reply HELP and the answer is:

Visit Milo, Maine moderation alerts. Reply STOP to opt out. Message and data rates may apply. For help contact marirozelle79@gmail.com

What happens to the number

No mobile information collected for text alerts is sold, and none of it is shared with third parties or affiliates for marketing or promotional purposes. A moderator’s number goes to Twilio, the service that carries the message, and nowhere else, for the sole purpose of delivering that moderator’s own alerts.

The longer version of all of this, and everything else the site collects, is on the privacy policy. The terms of use cover the rest.

Who runs this

Friends of Milo, a volunteer committee in Milo, Maine, runs the site. Dead Pixel Design built it and operates the servers and the alerting for them. Questions go to hello@visitmilomaine.org, which reaches the committee.
